MATTING

WHAT IS IT?

Matting is when the dogs hair over time becomes tangled due to infrequent or no brushing. This is common in dogs with longer hair as it is harder to manage.

WHY SHOULD I CARE?

Mats can lead to serious skin issues such as hematomas (pooling of blood caused by lost circulation), pulling of the skin underneath the mat, hot spots (where moisture gets trapped) and can create bacteria or yeast infections, restricted movement, hide other pre existing issues such a injuries, fleas and ticks, allergies etc.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT MATS?

Regular brushing at home using a slicker brush and comb will prevent the hair from becoming matted. Regular grooming appointments will also ensure that your groomer will remove any mats and keep the hair soft and manageable. Check common areas such as the neck/chest, armpits, ears and tail and spend extra time brushing those areas.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY PET IS MATTED?

Please bring your pet to a trusted groomer where we can start fresh with a short new do and ensure all the mats are off and investigate for any skin issues.
